The requirement
A 220-home scheme needed baseline ecological appraisal and a statutory biodiversity net gain assessment to accompany an outline application.

The ecology challenge
The initial layout left insufficient space to deliver 10% net gain on site, which would have meant buying off-site units at material cost.

Our approach
We ran the metric against the draft layout early and showed where modest changes to public open space and hedgerow retention would close the gap, rather than reporting a shortfall after the layout was fixed.

The outcome
Net gain of just over 12% delivered entirely on site. No off-site credit purchase, and a management plan the client could hand to a maintenance contractor.
